This significant day was established by the United Nations Population Fund in 1989 and was celebrated  in more than 90 countries in 1990.

The aim of celebrating World Population Day is to raise awareness of the importance of family planning, reproductive health, poverty, women's health, gender equality, early marriages, and human rights, to pay special attention to people's problems and to achieve common development.

World Population Day has been widely celebrated in Azerbaijan since 2005. The "Concept of Demographic Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan", which defines the state strategy in the field of demography was approved.

The theme of this day, which is celebrated every year under one motto, is "The right to choose is our answer." The pandemic is affecting family planning, the number of births, and reproductive health. At the same time, the only solution to all demographic problems, regardless of the increase or decrease in the birth rate, is to ensure equal reproductive rights and health for all.
